One of the biggest challenges for Public Service Media in recent years has been to be able to innovate and implement new technologies that both streamline their internal production processes and improve the quality of the services offered to the public.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged in this regard as one of the most promising elements due to its ability to automate mechanical processes that can allow professionals to devote their time to more cognitive tasks, as well as to facilitate the collection and presentation of big data or to encode and store content more efficiently.
The application of AI in RTVE and RTP is conceived as a mechanism that will allow these media to adapt to the needs of a digitalised society. In this sense, the Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española has already begun to apply these tools in areas such as automatic news writing, with the help of external companies such as Narrativa, and hopes to extend their use to other relevant aspects such as the personalisation of content.
For its part, Rádio e Televisão de Portugal includes these systems in its future roadmap, despite the fact that so far its experiences with AI have been limited. Among the challenges highlighted by these corporations under the application of AI are the reconciliation of these tools with the values of public service, particularly transparency, diversity, quality and innovation, as well as the inclusion of professional profiles that allow the development of these tools within the framework of the media.
